2021 Resolutions Check-In

Original fiction:

Retronym
The Namefinder
Finish writing the first arc of a comic
Write a 2-5k word story about anything
Camp NaNoWriMo
A poem about animals

This year wasn't a deliberate experiment on what happens if I don't regularly take stock of my resolutions, but it might as well have been. I mean, there were other factors as well and I don't claim to know what all of them even were, but I want to be a writer in 2022 and if monthly updates might help that to happen, that's enough to make it worth it.

Fanfiction:

Complete a B/A one-shot
Work on one of my abandoned B/A projects
"All Partial Evil"
Rewrite the Rahne/Dany fic I started in 2020
Continue my Lion King fic
Begin my Kastle sequel

The only fanfiction I wrote in 2021 was for Lucifer, which of course I couldn't see coming. I haven't had a new hyperfixation since that one faded so I haven't felt any urge to write fanfiction for anything, but I'm still going to transfer this entire list over to the new year and cross my fingers.

Art and crafting:

Paint another elephant
Make a fun tree or a cozy bed for Tealeaf
Advent calendar
Lord of the Rings digital art
Wheel of Time art
Take one of those monthly challenges like Inktober and actually do the whole month

I can't wait to show you the fun cat tree (Mona and the foster kittens ended up using it more than Tealeaf), although it's been finished for months now so I don't know why I haven't shown you already. The elephant was intended as a gift for a friend and I still want to give it to her, and I'm likewise still interested in the rest (even got started on the Advent calendar already). Maybe this will be an art year and maybe a writing year, but I won't complain if I get either one.

TV and games:

Finish FFIX
Watch The Clone Wars
Get started on a chronological MCU rewatch
Through S3 of Buffy reviews

It's probably time to accept that I'm never going to finish FFIX, or if I do, it will be on a whim at some random point in the future. I guess I still want to watch some of the animated Star Wars stuff. As for the MCU, I'm currently just past GotG Vol. 2 and AoS S2 and I'm not sure what's next.

Other:

Revisit my MMO
Repost my 30-day meme
Handwritten letters or postcards to anyone who wants them, sign up here

Not much to say about these but I'm renewing that invitation because I really do like sending people mail and I have some cool postcards to share.

End of 2021 Meme

1. What did you do in 2020 that you'd never done before?
Interviewed celebrities on Zoom, went camping without any other humans, completed a carpentry project from scratch, got established as a foster house for the local cat shelter, out-drank my sister.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I honestly have barely checked my list of resolutions all year, which is very out of character for me. I plan to make a good list and take it seriously this time.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
We lost a cat, Lucy. Also, someone from Simon's church died in the summer. I didn't know her all that well but she was really kind and one of the first people to help us out when we moved to Colorado. It was sudden and upsetting for everyone.

5. What countries did you visit?
England. And I'm still here!

6. What would you like to have in 2021 that you lacked in 2020?
A daily routine, landscaping, and a reliable desktop computer.

7. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Probably all work related, but I'm okay with that. I was also pleased with myself for making/painting the cat tree and painting my shield, and for that camping trip. Oh, and I did a good job clearing some stuff out of the house and donating it.

8. What was your biggest failure?
I've really been letting my health go lately.

9. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing of note.

10. What was the best thing you bought?
A discounted kitchen cabinet, a small vacuum cleaner, wine slushy mix, a nice wool coat for my husband, some used Sandman graphic novels, comfy pillows, a phone with a better battery life, a handmade cloak for my oldest niece, a Duolingo subscription.

11. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Dogs.

12. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Gatekeepers.

13. Where did most of your money go?
The AppleTV subscription that I keep forgetting to cancel. Jk, nothing really stands out.

14. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Three Renaissance Faire visits, my sister and nieces coming for a summer visit, the trip I'm on right now, Wheel of Time screeners, seeing Matt Murdock in an MCU movie.

15. What song will always remind you of 2020?
Everything that Tom Ellis performed as Lucifer.

16. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder? Happier.
Fatter or thinner? Fatter.
Richer or poorer? Richer, but not so's you'd notice.

17. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Art, writing, blogging, hiking, and yoga.

18. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Oversleeping.

19. How will you be spending Christmas?
So, my parents went to spend it in Missouri with my sister's family, and we were preparing for our flight on Boxing Day, and Simon had a lot of Christmas services wearing him down, so we took it as easily as possible. I even accepted an editing shift. But we did have a few gifts to open, and Christmas crackers, and Vánočka, and I felt pretty content all day.

20. What was your favorite TV program(s)?
The Wheel of Time and Lucifer.

21. What was the best book you read?
Huckleberry Finn, The Gulag Archipelago Vol. 2, New Spring, and several others listed in the fandom meme.

22. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Hadestown.

23. What did you want and get?
A birdbath, oven mitts, a Drabbit, a black cat, Lugia, a paved garden path, vaccinated.

24. What did you want and not get?
S'mores, fancy body lotion, a mouse pad. And more Covid restrictions lifted.

25. What was your favorite film of this year?
Wolfwalkers, The Suicide Squad, Tenet, the MCU trio, and several others listed in the fandom meme.

26. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Went out for dinner and drinks with husband, parents, and friend. Got some nice gifts from all of them. I recall a cake but I don't remember what it was or where it came from.

27. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Kerensa embracing walky time like a normal dog. And maybe my full LJ icon package back. I mean, it's worth a try, right?

28. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2021?
I think I'm gradually starting to get it back. I just started wearing (minimal) makeup again and wearing stud earrings in my secondary piercings.

29. What kept you sane?
My family, my pets, nature, and art.

30. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Daniel Henney. There have been times I almost blushed just thinking about him.

31. What political issue stirred you the most?
I'm still thinking about that one exemplary cop at the Capitol in January who risked his own safety to lead the insurrectionists away from where they could do more harm. I don't want to talk about anything political, I'm just really humbled by that guy.

32. Who did you miss?
I wish we had been able to spend more holidays with the whole family, and I wish my in-laws had been able to visit when they planned to.

33. Who was the best new person you met?
Lemona Angel Sif Right-Ear Jacobs, our sweet foster-fail kitty. We also like our new next door neighbors.

34. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2021:
When people are sad you can't cheer them up by telling them that you also are sad! Or that there are other people who are sad! Share your happiness instead!

35. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
The meanest dog you'll ever meet,
He ain't the hound dog in the street.
He bears some teeth and tears some skin,
But brother, that's the worst of him.
The dog you really got to dread
Is the one that howls inside your head.
It's him whose howling drives men mad,
And a mind to its undoing.

For comics I'm still on Sandman: A Game of You, for classics I'm about to start one of Mark Twain's less popular novels, and for poetry, well, after months of ignoring the Keats on my nightstand I finally started picking it up again. Maybe the man won't singlehandedly kill my love of poetry after all.
