I've become so smitten with four certain episodes of The Punisher that I started rewatching the entire Netflix MCU lineup from the beginning so I can experience them again in the full context. Yes I'm writing a Punisher fic. Why would you even have to ask that. I didn't finish my original novel and I have a slew of GotG and BtVS fics in progress that readers would probably enjoy so obviously the thing to do is devote myself to a new fandom and ignore everything else I was planning to accomplish in 2017.

Okay so actually I was posting because I had a couple GotG one-shots in storage and I wanted to have something to post. Not sure if anyone here is still reading for this fandom and this one wasn't that popular on Ao3 but here you go. It's about Yondu.

Title: Nock, Draw, Release
Author: Kairos
Fandom: Guardians of the Galaxy
Wordcount: 1602
Summary: Yondu has a fin and an arrow and he once had a family; this is how he got them.

I don't actually know if I'm going to get cards out this year, let alone on time. I'm finally feeling mostly better (like, maybe I can actually sleep in my own bed tonight and not wake my husband up with coughing fits? Maybe?), but my in-laws will be here in a week and I need to shop and clean and augh there's too much, this post was just supposed to be to collect mailing addresses and here I am fretting about my life.

ANYWAY. If you would like a card, please comment here with your address. This does not guarantee you a card, but it does make me happy to know that people read my post and like to receive my cards, so you might as well. Comments are screened, of course, so I'll be the only one who can see it.

Um. Deck the halls?

Original Fiction:
Well, we all know what I tried to do. It does allow me to cross NaNoWriMo off my resolutions, but not the other one I was aiming for, "Write a schlock paranormal romance", unless I finish a rough draft in December. Which might happen, who knows!

Art and Crafting:
Oh! I did finish designing my superhero costumes. Not particularly happy with any of them, so I'm in no hurry to scan and post, but I'm glad they're out of the way.
I also cut out the pieces for my skirt. I feel like that should be the hardest part out of the way, but I'm pretty sure it's not.

Reading:
Was going to let myself off the hook this month for books, since I was supposed to devote all my time to writing and anyway the book I had just started was Anna Karenina, which is huge, but then I ended up getting The Handmaid's Tale from the library and finishing it on vacation.
Now that's a book that I've seen on every must-read list for classics, feminism, dystopia, you name it. In other words, I was prepared to hate it. I didn't, but I don't get what the fuss is about either. Not going to go into depth here since I'm sure at least someone reading this has a high opinion of the book and I don't want to hurt any feelings. I just got bored after the first hundred pages of patriarchy and adjectives. Anna Karenina is excellent so far, though.
I also read a bunch of children's books to my nieces. Now that's some worthwhile literature.
Not much further in The Path of Daggers, but it's nice to have nearby to keep returning to it.

Other:
No reviews or anything because no posts or anything. I'd really like to tell you all how much I loved The Punisher, though.

Heyyyyy LJ what's up. I'm back. With confessions!

First, I never really left. Been lurking for pretty much the entire month, but drew the line at posting or commenting, which I admit was kind of arbitrary.

Second, I failed NaNoWriMo. Got up to about 35k words. There are a lot of reasons, some predictable, some just due to personal failings, but I've mostly decided to lay the blame on my body betraying me. I was supposed to spend this last weekend catching up and I got hit by the flu. Still coming down from it.

Plan is to get back on the horse starting now, but by that I mean the novel horse, the LJ horse, the real life horse, and a few other horses too, and we know how that usually works out. Anyway, don't be surprised if I pop up in your old entries to say hi.

Original fiction:
Worked on the first arc of my superhero comic.
Ready to go for NaNoWriMo, which, if successful, will cross two items off this list.

Art and crafting:
Almost finished coloring the superhero costumes.
Found the fabric and took my measurements for the skirt.

Reading:
Finished Good Poems, which is kind of a freebie because I read a poem a night anyway. Kind of not sure if I actually finished anything else!
But I did take home a nice library haul and spent some time on an awesome nonfiction, How to Tame a Fox. I've been seeing articles about these silver foxes online for a while, and I'm so glad there's a whole book about it now. Definitely one I'd recommend to the animal lovers on my flist (represent). I didn't finish and I had to return it early because it's a new book, but I'll come back to it sometime.
And I'm maybe a third of the way through A Path of Daggers, book 8 of Wheel of Time. This is where the series really starts to slog, but I'm okay about going more slowly now, since taaroko is gaining on me and that ought to make it more fun.

TV and games:
Posted a couple of those BtVS reviews. Just one more and I can at least say I've gotten through Season 1.

Other:
Did my TV review, doing my monthly post now. (Doing all the internet stuff now, because then if I don't get a chance tomorrow, I won't be able to tell myself I'm already behind and I should just give up on NaNo, take that self, I've got your number.)

See you in a month!

Okay, I admit it. I'm entering NaNoWriMo.

I'm also traveling for work early on Tuesday and returning on Friday. I've got one other business trip in November, and we're flying to Chicago to spend Thanksgiving with my sister's family, and at some point we'll need to celebrate our anniversary and prepare for December, which will mostly be taken up by visiting in-laws.

In other words, I'm going to fail NaNoWriMo, but I feel like giving it my best effort is the kind of thing I need to be doing right now. Unfortunately, best effort means eliminating distractions, so you probably won't see me at all for the next month. I'll allow myself back onto social media if I'm ahead on my wordcount for the day, or if I fail so spectacularly and so early that I can tell I'm never catching up. (This is essentially what happened the first two or three times I entered, some ten-fifteen years ago.)

So please don't take it personally if I'm even worse about commenting or responding than I usually am. And if anyone else happens to be entering, come say hi.

Yeah, so there's so much coming out I'm overwhelmed by TV again, but cool with falling way behind and catching up once they're all neatly contained on Netflix or whatever. Can you believe all this Marvel coming at us? Discuss.

...And I might as well mention now, I'm not planning to watch any TV, unless it's family time, for the month of November. Stay tuned for why.

One of my resolutions this year was to post my Buffy reviews through Season 3. I'm not going to make it, but I thought a token effort in that direction might make me feel better. Just have to get through a few more S1s and then I can skip ahead to "Lie to Me."

Whoops, bit late. I'm gonna blame it on travel again.

Original fiction:
Worked on "Retronym". A little. Finally.

Art and crafting:
Bought a pattern for that skirt I'm supposed to make.

Reading:
Finished Earthrise by MCA Hogarth. I liked it a lot! Was pleasantly surprised, after the Dreamhealers books, to find that she can set up a plot complete with twists, foreshadowing, and an action-y climax. Didn't finish The Prince yet, somehow. Earthrise was longer than I had expected.
I feel like I can count To Be or Not to Be by Ryan North as my secondary book. I didn't finish it cover to cover, but it's a Choose Your Own Adventure (seriously - not that publisher, but it works exactly the same way), so cover to cover isn't what's done anyway. I finished it several times the way it's meant to be finished.
Most of the way through A Crown of Swords. Rediscovered a lot of crazy (and awesome) stuff that happens in this one, as well as at least three of the most maddening arcs kicking off.

Other:
The 30-day meme is complete! Not that I wouldn't still like to add bits to it. I'll collect all the posts at some point, though, so it looks like the single piece it was meant to be.
Apparently I didn't write any reviews of anything all month. But, but, the meme! That's why I barely did any reading or writing, too!

Anyway. Back soon to hopefully finish the year off with some actual accomplishments.

Day Twenty-Six: Titles

No cuts - it's not like there are any spoilers anyway (except #12, which is a special case). This is what it says on the tin: the titles that I like the best for being titles. Not influenced by whether the actual media is any good. Random order again because there's no ranking these, although #1 definitely deserves its place.

26. Let's Kill Hitler (Doctor Who episode)

This line in context, and its delivery, were the best part of an otherwise middling episode, but it's also a delightful way to summarize the plot and enthuse the viewer because yay, we're going to kill Hitler!

25. Joy Sonnet in a Random Universe (poem)

Gimmick poem but the title makes me feel good; the whole thing might make you feel good if you search it and read it out loud.

24. The Unbearable Lightness of Being (book/movie)

See, I don't think this beautiful phrase could have occurred if it were written in English first. I'm guessing it doesn't sound as good in Czech.

23. Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (song by Fleet Foxes)

This one has my firm recommendation for the entire melody and lyrics too, btw.

22. City Nightfall's Rendezvous (short story)

You won't find this story anywhere; my friend wrote it when both of us were about 15 and I'm sure he's wiped the internet clean of it, but the cadence has stuck in my head all this time.

21. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (book/movie)

Someday I've got to read this, I think.

20. Grim Fandango (video game)

I think I heard once that it was named after a card game or something?

19. Things Fall Apart (book by Chinua Achebe/song by Cristina)

There are multiple books named after lines in Yeats's The Second Coming, understandably since they all come out pretty damn cool. Anyone noticed how often I steal lines of poetry for use in fanfiction? Sometimes a trick just works.

18. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (movie)

I had to look this one up just now because I thought I remembered it was also a line from a poem. It is; "Eloisa to Abelard” by Alexander Pope.

17. Half-Life (video game)

Short and to the point, but there's so many ways it can be interpreted.

16. The Sound and the Fury (book by William Faulkner)

Shakespeare quote this time. It sounds so glorious and oceanic on its own, but the meaning within the text changes everything.

15. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (movie/play)

Oh hey, also a Shakespeare quote. I did at one point rent this one just on the basis of the title, and will need to do so again because I think it was too smart for me at the time.

14. Mossflower (book by Brian Jacques)

Along with the food descriptions, one thing Jacques really had a knack for was place names. This was my favorite.

13. Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love (song by TMBG)

The song isn't worth your time but please enjoy this unlikely phrase to roll around in your head.

12. John Dies at the End (book/movie)

Yeah I watched this for the sake of the title too, even though I don't like horror. It was kind of neat (and funny), if confusing.

11. Battlestar Galactica (TV show, twice)

Battlestar Galactica! Battlestar-freakin'-Galactica! I say it again, it's fun to say, Battlestar Galactica, Battlestar Galactica...I want to get two ferrets and name them Battlestar and Galactica.

10. Ancestral Recall (Magic: the Gathering card)

Could probably make an entire list of just Magic card names, but the only other one I can think of right now is "Naked Singularity". Oh! "Apocalypse Chime", that's a good one.

9. The Fault in Our Stars (book/movie)

Haven't read it, haven't seen it, don't really intend to, don't need to be convinced to change my mind, but kudos for that sweet title.

8. Bam Thwok (song by the Pixies)

If I ever open up a nightclub this is what I'm going to call it.

7. Atlas Shrugged (book by Ayn Rand)

For sure gonna read this sometime.

6. Dude, Where's My Car? (movie)

I watched it, so you don't have to - you're welcome - but you've quoted the title at some point so don't say this movie never did anything for you.

5. Progress as If Survival Mattered (book)

At my house we have a few shelves of used books which we bought in bulk to resell. One of them near my desk had this title, and it haunted me until I added it to the list; I don't know anything else about it.

4. Hellblazer (comic)

Adapted into a movie and a TV show and neither of them have used this awesome and thematically descriptive antihero name, I don't understand that.

3. A Ring of Endless Light (book by Madeline L'Engle)

Wikipedia tells me, "The title originates from a phrase in the seventeenth-century Welsh poet Henry Vaughan's poem 'The World'," which I remember being used in the text. It also tells me I need to reread this, because I haven't since I was a kid and I think I loved it even while the whole thing was going over my head.

2. Yourself or Someone Like You (album by Matchbox 20)

Because what possible context could this have?

1. Lady Dolphina's Warrior Goddess Belly Dance Workout

Oh my God you guys I've been so excited to bless your life with this extraordinary title especially since I pictured you reading it and thinking ha ha must be some kind of comedy or spoof but NO, it's an ACTUAL WORKOUT VIDEO, it's BASED ON BELLY DANCING and it's made by a woman who calls herself LADY DOLPHINA and she refers to women as WARRIOR GODDESSES throughout the WHOLE THING, I know this because I'VE DONE THE LADY DOLPHINA WARRIOR GODDESS BELLY DANCE WORKOUT, it's been some time but HOW COULD I EVER FORGET?

(Except, googling just now has revealed that there doesn't seem to be a video which puts all the elements in the same order that I quoted up there, but I don't want to ruin it, just accept my version. You can trust me, I'm a warrior goddess. Lady Dolphina told me so.)

This is a queued entry and does not reflect my current status. A new post will appear each day this month, but to preserve novelty, the categories that I used won’t be listed publicly beforehand. If you’d like to use my template, let me know and I’ll privately send you the complete list of categories so that you can rearrange and swap them out to suit yourself.

If you don’t want to bother with the entire meme but still want to play, it is highly encouraged to list some of your own favorites for today’s category in the comments.
